My Typical Workday as a Marketing Cloud Consultant...
(This list is everything I recorded on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024)
Wake up at 6:32 AM CST.
Do 3 sets of pushups when I wake up.
Brush my teeth & clean my room in between pushup sets.
Coded a preference center for a client (fixed bugs).
Worked on an email campaign in Intercom (for a startup).
Had a smoothie & eggs.
Went to WeWork.
Helped a client troubleshoot Distributed Marketing.
Went home & wrote.
Posted on LinkedIn & replied to comments.
Cooked venison & did a team meeting (with a startup I'm helping).
Worked on more code (to troubleshoot bugs) & messaged a coworker.
Went to the gym with my girlfriend.
Went to the grocery store, cooked, showered, and ate with my girlfriend.
Played guitar.
Wrote in Monk Manual.
Went to bed by 11:00 PM CST.
What I Like Most
What I like the most about my schedule is that I get to work when I want to.
Not when someone else tells me to work.
My favorite time to work is before everyone wakes up.
I have my #1 priority set in my Monk Manual - and I attack it first thing in the morning.
Finishing the top priority before most people wake up is how I win the day.
My whole day is off to a smooth start when I do the important things first.
That way, I'm not thinking about "what needs to get done".
Even if clients message me in a panic, I'm not panicked because the top priority is finished.
And if there is another top priority, I have bandwidth for it, because I don't have something else looming over my head.
Anywhooo....
On to the rest of my day
I have to get out the house
I recently renewed my subscription to WeWork for two reasons.
To get out of my apartment and see other humans.
To have a legit office space that I can call my own.
It can get depressing being in my apartment for too long.
I prefer to work in my apartment in the morning (with zero distractions).
But when my top priorities are finished, I have to get out and about.
'When' & 'Where' You Work Is Important
As you can see, I get my work done, but I don't work on the same things all day long.
My brain has to take breaks.
I need mental bandwidth.
There has to be some cooking, walking, or gym time in between work for me to thrive.
I can sit down for a few hours and knock out a task, but then I need to get up and do something different.
That's the way I'm wired.
I'm more productive at work when I do other things besides work.
That's why I was never happy sitting in a cubicle.
Jobs where you're in a cubicle all day expect you to either:
Work all day.
Or work and be in meetings all day.
Then they give you a one-hour lunch break and expect you to be the best at what you do.
I know myself better than that now.
I don't like to sit in an office and do one thing all day.
It's not the way I'm wired.
I will finish the job but need to do it on my terms.
The work will still be done by the deadline.
But it will be done better when I can do it (when and where) I work best.
Why In-Demand Skills are Required
One thing to add to the whole "Where you work" part...
It's important that you learn in demand skills.
If you learn TECH skills that are in demand, it's even better.
There's 2 reasons:
Employers will respect your schedule more.
You can work anywhere in the world.
When you have a skill that an employer NEEDS, you get treated better.
Every job is "needed" in some sense.
But the mission-critical jobs, like "Coders" who know Marketing Cloud, are in high demand.
That goes for coders in just about any profession.
It also goes for people who know Marketing Cloud at most companies.
Your skill is what determines your worth in the job marketplace.
When you have in-demand skills, you get more options to work from home, and people don't bother you as much.
People are happy as long as you get your work done (on time).
That's why I still don't understand the whole "You have to be in an office all day to work" mentality, but don't get me started.
Take Care Of Your Body
One thing to note here is that I love to take care of my body.
Caring for your body and mind will make you a much better consultant.
You will feel like a million bucks if you wake up and do pushups when you get out of bed.
Add a shower, and you'll be on top of the world.
As I go through my day, I eat natural, whole foods, so my mind is sharp.
You have to treat your body like the well-designed machine that it is.
As the day goes on, you will either fill up your cup and be energized.
Or drain yourself and be demotivated to do anything after work.
The key is balance and doing what you love everyday.
Make sure that you're living life to the fullest each day.
You get to work remote and be anywhere you want.
Take advantage of it.
In 2024 alone, I've been to:
Singapore
The UK
Greece
Brazil
And all over the United States
Take advantage of the benefit of working from a laptop. 👨🏽💻
Do your work and make your clients happy.
The world is your oyster.
And life is meant to be lived!
Enjoy.
